Buy Sexy Servers Online - Or Make Your Own

Buy Sexy Servers Online - Or Make Your Own

Servers are not often seen as particularly 'sexy' products. For most people who are ready to buy server cases for their computing business, image will be at the very bottom of the pile of specification requirements - if they feature at all.
However for the domestic technophile who is looking into the world of home servers, style can be an important consideration. Rather than sitting in the office all week and being associated with little more than hard work, a home server will be a permanent feature of your household. Like other permanent features, your home server will give visitors to your home a certain impression about you - and if you want to make sure that impression is good, you will also want your home server to look good. Netgear routers
There are a number of businesses online that can provide ready-made custom home server cases with style firmly embedded in the design. For the more creative people amongst you, even the most dull and drab of server cases can be modified to look rather cool. Whilst this is not necessarily a task for those who are short of time, this is the route to the most original and unique server cases on the planet. To get some inspiration, simply search "show off your rig" in Google and look for one of the many threads in computer hardware forums where users have uploaded pictures of their beloved beauties.

Of course it is not only server cases that can be given a stylish makeover. In fact, depending on the space available inside your server cabinet vs the space free inside your desktop PC case, you may find modifying a PC to be easier. Whether you go down the home server or desktop PC route, there are a number of different features you can add to make yours stand out from the crowds.
Here are a couple of hints and tips for to get you started if you have decided that case modding is for you:

1. Windows

No, we don't mean the operating system, silly. If you're serious about showing off your computer, you will either want to purchase a basic case with a window installed in the side panel or invest the time and energy required to install a window in an existing case. This will show off the internal components of your computer, and pave the way for your more interesting modifications.

2. Lights

Led Lights
There is something very appealing about adding extra lights to your pride and joy. Just as car modders will often add undercarriage lighting to their creations, so case modders will often add LED lights to their computer cases. You can pick any colour you want, and apart from space restrictions inside your case, you are pretty much free to put them wherever you like.
We'll leave it to you to investigate the more intricate details of case modding. Or just buy your case ready made and modded from one of the reputable retailers you'll find online.
If you're looking for a computer case to use as the foundation for a modified masterpiece, you need look no further than Microbite. Whether you need a server cabinet or something as pedestrian as Netgear routers, Microbite are sure to have the answer

Apple Vs PC

Apple Vs PC

As you walk into your neighborhood coffee shop, a quick glance around will suffice to sum up the various kinds of people inhabiting the place. The hipster with his scarf and laid back attitude, the businessman with his three-piece suit and tie, the mom with her list of tasks to accomplish. Before seeing the actual people, you can probably make a pretty good guess as to what they may look like based on the kind of computer they are using. Our possessions have come to define us in this age - your computer may define who you are.
From a technical standpoint, Apple is a few steps behind the top PC's. Every release of a new Macbook pro hardware set is preceded by high-end PC laptops with the same technology. When the i7 processor was released about a year ago, PC's had the newest processing unit several months before Apple integrated it into their systems. Why then do people prefer Apple to PC on such a large scale? After all, Apple passed up Dell, Hp, and Toshiba long ago and at one point this year they were the largest company in the world.
First of all, Apple takes the cake on aesthetics. The unmistakable look of the silver Macbook Pro with its flush lcd screen and backlit keyboard is hard to replicate. This design is not just pretty, it's also sturdy. Apple makes its laptops out of all aluminum, making them much more durable the mostly plastic-based PC laptops. In a drop test, Apple with outperform PC nine times out of ten.

Secondly, Apple has done a great job of making sure their designs are perfected internally before releasing them. They may not release a new model every month, but when they do release the next generation, it is near flawless at its core. This is due to Apple's meticulous testing strategies that ensure a small number of defects. Common issues that do plague both Apple and PC such as overheating, graphics card failure, and hard drive failure, seem to not affect new Macbook Pros nearly as much as new PCs.
Thirdly, Apple has effectively captured the market for "cool" technology. When IBM was founded in the mid 1900's their aim was to produce computers that were functional and made work flow more productive - not look cool. When Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, and other PC brands joined the race, they took this same approach, each brand creating some kind of niche, all under the larger umbrella of IBM's philosophy of functionality.

When Steve Jobs took over Apple in 1997 after a hiatus from the company, his focus was on being user friendly by using eye candy. Every detail of an Apple computer, down to the font used in its coding is meticulously reviewed for effective looks. The idea worked, and Apple is confidently the only widely accepted "cool" computer.

Whether your a mom, a businessman, or a hipster, one them remains true - Apple computers make you cool. They may not have the newest cutting edge technology or be functionally any different from your everyday PC, but the panache they carry makes them a product sought after by all.

What Is Idea Management?

What Is Idea Management?

Idea Management is the process of receiving ideas from people to be able to improve business. The thoughts usually come either from customers or from employees.
But I.M. is not only receiving the ideas. It is the whole process of receiving, prioritizing and implementing ideas.
Some companies use a letter box to receive ideas from their employees. Sometimes they take the papers they receive and sort them in order of priority and sometimes they put them into an Idea Management Software to make sure they have everything stored. Some companies use the Idea Management Software for collecting ideas from the employees and let them follow the progress of the idea through the system. When using the idea management software towards the customers some companies use the voting functionality, having customers adding ideas and then let everyone vote for the ideas to see which ideas are most popular to implement.

The main issue that organizations get into are however that they have not thought through the strategy around what to do with the ideas before starting to collect them. Most companies have a great intention, but managing ideas and rejecting ideas in the right way is not always easy since you have to consider the psychology around keeping people inspired even though their ideas are not chosen. It is also common for companies to collect ideas and then not have time to do anything at all about them. This is usually one good way to make employees dissatisfied at work.
If you have decided to receive ideas from your personnel it is a great idea to create a small project of it. You will have to define what scope the ideas should be within. As always it is good to clarify the scope by defining the boundaries.
Since ideas can be anything from where to celebrate Christmas to creating new products to market there will of course involve different amount of complexity around the process after receiving the idea. An example of how you can do for a bit larger idea projects is described in this article.

The ideas should be handed in by a specific date and an idea management group should be assigned to go through the ideas and recommend the best ideas to the decision makers. The best thing is to bring all ideas into an Idea Management Software to make sure that all ideas are stored for future opportunities. I would hesitate to bring in budget too much in the idea management process if the scope isn't something like a restaurant visit, a trip or so. Most people have less knowledge of all costs involved so bringing in the money aspect into larger ideas tend to destroy the inspiration.
When the best ideas should be presented they should be done so by the employees who came up with the ideas. They should, before presenting the ideas, create a professional presentation and bring in issues around implementing the ideas, such as risks, some ideas around costs, etc.
Having the originator of the idea presenting the idea and what it can do to the company is a great way of encouraging the personnel to do even better work in the company.
When the idea is about to be implemented it should first be tested to make sure it is possible to implement. Ideas can sometimes look good on the drawing board but very hard to implement and costly to market.
Of course the person who came up with the idea should be part of the implementation in some way. Not necessarily in an active position but at least in a passive supportive position.
After having verified that the idea is possible to market and be a part of the organization it is time to start launching. A launch can be for the organisation as well as for customers since an idea can be for internal as well as external use.

I always encourage recognition for ideas that are implemented. Having a person involved in the whole process of realising the idea is one type of recognition but sometimes it can be really nice with a diploma for "Best Idea of the month" and a dinner for two or something similar. This kind of recognition is a cost-effective way of having people more involved in the business and make work a challenging part of their overall life instead of a must.
I also believe to encourage people to come up with ideas even though they might be totally crazy and hard to realise. This is why I usually don't remove thoughts from the Management Software but rather set a lower priority or set the in a state as "thoughts for the future." This is an important part of not making people discouraged because their idea might not be chosen.

Why Did My Hard Drive Crash?

Why Did My Hard Drive Crash?

As a Field Service Tech I'm often asked "what caused my hard drive to fail?" To add to the confusion, when we think of the word "hard drive" we think: durable consumer items like our cars and washing machines that can last a very long time. So naturally something called a hard drive should, in our minds also last a very long time and you should never experience a hard drive crash! What's really unreasonable is replacing a fairly new unit that has failed. But the number one question from customers often sadly is: "what about all my photos and my information?" And when I ask whether they've backed up their hard drive, too often I get a blank, ghastly stare down. Everything gone and it could have been prevented with a back up plan.

What causes failure? Can it be prevented?
It's the old saying: there are two kinds of hard drives, those that haven't failed and those that have.
It nearly goes without saying that viruses and malware can attack and ultimately doom your hard drive so be sure you have a good anti-virus, anti-malware software on your computer to recognize threats in advance and work toward keeping you safe on the net. Look for products that can advise you of when upgrades/updates are available so you can always have the latest threat deterrents.
In the process of handling literally billions of bits of information electronically every second it's turned on, it's easy for a hard drive to become disrupted by even the smallest outside electrical influences such as your cell phone, some loud speakers, magnets and also fluctuations in the power supply from your utility but of course sudden power spikes and complete outages. USB's, computer jargon for Un-interruptable Power Supplies provide a continuous and "clean" power supply for your computer. Even the very smallest can begin shut down procedures for your computer in a power failure to help prevent hard drive and other power outage issues that computers can have.

Finally one of the many ways your hard drive can be damaged is simply old fashioned wear and tear, fatigue and accidents! Liquids introduced into the drive, dropping a computer accidentally and so on can damage your hard drive. The fix for this is simple, be careful with your machine when moving it and setting it up, and make yourself a rule about drinks near it - try not to! At least have a lid on your drink and when using a laptop keep the drink as far away as possible to avoid oopsies!
Most of these are really common sense easy maintenance for these tiny metal discs spinning upwards of seven thousand five hundred times every second! And storing virtually all the knowledge of mankind in the palm of your hand! However sometimes they fail for no particular reason at all so be sure you have some sort of a Hard Disc Drive Back Up Preparation sooner.

Upgrade or New System

Upgrade or New System

Most computer users eventually come to a point where they need their computer to preform better and they wonder if they should upgrade what they have or buy a new computer. To determine whether it is better to upgrade a computer or buy a whole new one there are a few key things to take into consideration and a few things that needs to be known about the computer in question. If the computer specifications are known then it is simply a matter of doing price checks on the compatible hardware that needs to be upgrade and comparing it with the cost of a whole new system.

The first step in deciding if an upgrade should be performed is to gather all the relevant information about the computer. A good place to start is in the System tab in windows. On a Windows 7 system this is located at Control Panel > System and Security > System. It will be in a similar place for all versions of windows. Here one can see the amount of ram installed and the processor type and speed as well as what Windows edition is being used. As a simplification, if the computer is running Windows 98 or older it is a good idea to just buy a whole new computer. If it is newer there is a chance that upgrading might be worth the effort and cost.
The next thing to look at from the system tab is the amount of RAM and the processor. If the computer is preforming poorly from inadequate hardware it will almost certainly be the processor, amount of RAM or the video card. A good minimum amount of RAM for Windows XP is 1 GB and for Vista or Windows 7, 2GB. For Windows XP a single core CPU running at least 2.8 GHZ should be adequate. For Vista or 7 dual or quad core cpu's are preferred but not required. A single core running at 3GHZ or higher would suffice. The video car usually only matters for gaming.

To determine what exact parts one needs and if the computer can support them the motherboard model needs to be known. Most computers come with documentation with this information, or the manufacturer's website will list it for most computer models. Also free programs like Everest Home Edition often show the motherboard model. Once the motherboard is known, it is just a matter of looking up what parts one wants to upgrade that are compatible with the motherboard and adding up the costs. If it is less than half of a new system then it makes sense to upgrade, otherwise a new system might be better.

Logical Hard Drive Crashes

Logical Hard Drive Crashes

We will focus on logical hard drive crashes in this article. In order to better understand logical crashes, let's take a look at the differences between logical and physical crashes. In a physical crash, the drive and its components have been physically damaged or destroyed. Abuse, usually unintentional, contributes to physical damage. Power surges or spikes damage electronic components. Normal wear and tear on the read/write heads causes the head to damage the surface of the drive media. Often there are clicking or grinding noises emanating from the drive, signaling imminent failure. The computer should be immediately shut down and taken to a qualified data recovery service.
A logical hard drive crash, on the other hand, results from file system or operating system corruption or failure. Computer viruses, malware attacks and improper shutdown procedures contribute to logical drive crashes. Operating system corruption keeps the drive from booting up, thereby rendering the user's data inaccessible.
Logical drive crashes are not limited to the main computer drive. External hard drives also fail and do not mount. The computer boots up correctly to the operating system; however, the files on the external drive cannot be read. The main culprit is turning off or unplugging the drive too soon. The computer may still be writing data to the drive and unplugging it before it finishes is a sure way to corrupt the data.
While physical drive crashes require component repair and specialized knowledge and equipment, logical failures can usually be fixed through a software solution. Although logical failures are less expensive to repair than physical failures, following the right procedures in the correct order is imperative for successful hard disk file recovery. An improperly performed recovery diminishes the success of NTFS file recovery. Note that file recovery must always be performed before operating system repair.
Recovery software works for both main drive and external hard drive data recovery. There are two methods of recovery: through the operating system as an application and by circumventing the operating system with an emergency boot disk. A software when used as an application might be used for mac recovery; accidentally deleted files are also recovered this way. Installing the software before a crash occurs is recommended so that the installation does not overwrite any files.
A boot disk has its own operating system so that it can run the computer without the main drive OS. Logically failed main drives require this capability. The computer runs from the CD or DVD, allowing access to the main drive. The boot disk retrieves the user's files and data, storing them on an external hard drive. After the files are safely stored on the external drive, the main drive is then restored.

Recovering Your Windows Password Using Password Resetter

Recovering Your Windows Password Using Password Resetter

So you forgot your password, eh?
So you've forgotten your password huh? Perhaps you never had the password because it was a computer you bought, or got given to you from family or a friend. Don't worry this is a more common problem than you might think, and yes there is a very simple solution which doesn't harm your computer like so many others. If your sick of software that promises it can help reset your password or help you recover it only to be let down time, and time again read on.
Some of the cooler features!
You don't need to know any of the previous passwords to recover your current password unlike some other programs. It works on all versions of Windows instead of just some like other software with less features. It has USB and CD/DVD Support which means you can hide the program so other people can't use it to break into your computer, and steal your information. There is no installation which again is good for security reasons. It's very easy to use which I will go further into in the next portion of this article.
It's easy to use and fully supported!
It's very easy to use you just have to follow the instructions, and you'll have it set up in no time. If for some reason there is any trouble there is live support waiting to help you 24/7 which means you can rest assured that you will be able to recover your password(s). A lot of older programs were used to exploit security flaws in Windows to recover passwords, but these only work for a limited time because obviously Microsoft isn't going to allow active security flaws in their operating system. Over all password resetter has a dedicated team that actively keeps it up to date which means you will always be able to depend on it, even when other programs fall short of promises they make.
The negative side of other password recovery tools

As mentioned before you can spend hours and hours just looking for a solution for this problem that works, a lot of these programs only work for one version of Windows or older versions and not the newer ones. You can not only waste your valuable time searching for a solution you can accidentally download viruses, adware, and spyware which harm your computer, annoy you, and steal your personal information. Most other password recovery tools don't offer you support especially not 24/7 support which leaves you to do a lot of guesswork and in the end you still might not figure it out which means your still going without your password.

Samsung ML2010 Toner Cartridge - Not Scanty at 3,000 Page Yield

Samsung ML2010 Toner Cartridge - Not Scanty at 3,000 Page Yield

Samsung Toner Cartridge
The Samsung ML2010 black and white laser printer has a skimpy starter toner cartridge capable of producing 1000 pages; however, the replacement ML2010d3 toner cartridge produces a generous 3000 page yield. At $80 and 3000 pages of stunning prints, the Samsung ML2010 toner cartridge is considered a great value compared to its competition.
The previous statement may sound self-serving to the printer manufacturer, but satisfied users can attest with conviction that the Samsung ML2010d3 is really one of the finest black and white laser printer ever produced in the market. Together with the Samsung ML2010 toner cartridge, it can deliver text at 17ppm (pages per minute) and graphics at 16ppm. Fits anywhere in small offices with its small footprint and has a base price of only $150. You could not possibly ask for more as it is the best printer suited for home office and business.
Compatible Toner Refill Kit
The Samsung ML2010 toner cartridge can survive three-toner refilling and could be refilled with a toner that raises the print capacity of up to 12000 pages. The ML2010d3 offers CPP (cost per page) of documents to 2.7 cents; however, using the toner refill kit narrows the CPP down to less than a cent (0.86) in the cartridge's lifetime. Users get the best of both worlds with an affordable black and white laser printer and the lowest cost of toner consumable at $8 per refill.
The cost of the ML2010d3 toner refill kit is very affordable compared to its OEM counterparts. The typical reaction of most users is to question print quality. Nevertheless, after getting past the initial reaction, users are guaranteed to experience similar fine prints delivered by the OEM Samsung ML2010 toner cartridge; consumers can also disregard the idea that the black and white laser printer might suffer degrees of deterioration later on. True enough, most user feedbacks online are positive and hovers around the quality and performance of the toner refill kit.
Excerpt from G. Chu's Review: "Print quality was fine. I don't do any major quality prints, so I can't distinguish subtleties, but it looks pretty good to me."
Positive responses from users about the toner refill kit is quite expected as the process of its manufacturing and laboratory testing has been patterned after the production of its OEM toner cartridge counterpart. Thus, users are assured of its print and yield performance to match, if not exceed that of the OEM. The only difference between the two products is the cost, since toner refilling is 90% cheaper than a new OEM replacement cartridge.
If the Samsung ML2010 toner cartridge print capacity is scanty, you have to think again. As certainly, an OEM capable of producing 3000 pages and a toner refill kit producing 9000 pages prove to be truly generous and economical.

Reasons to Say Yes and No to Samsung CLX 3180 Printer

Reasons to Say Yes and No to Samsung CLX 3180 Printer

The Samsung CLX 3180 Printer is a part of Samsung's elite printer series. As being something new and more elaborate than the past models of this brand, this machine has captured a lot of Yeses from users. This little machine may look like it has been "dwarfed by big and bulky printers from other brands" in terms of size - yet when it comes to being functional - this thing is small but terrible.

On the contrary, not everybody is pleased with the performance of Samsung CLX 3180. If you are planning to get a new printer for your office, home, or personal needs and you're considering this model, you better read the following points as it may just be helpful.
Yes: Reasons why you should get a Samsung CLX 3180
- It's inexpensive...but not cheap! How can a thing be inexpensive but "not cheap'? There are a lot of cheap printers out in the market, but what makes the Samsung CLX 3180 different is that you can get something of premium quality and durability without burning your wallet. Yes, the model is inexpensive, as compared to other brands of the same type; but it's not cheap because a) it does not look cheap (the structure is so chic) and b) its really working effectively.
- Output is of quality. This machine uses a Samsung CLX 3180 toner cartridge that includes the colors black, magenta, cyan and yellow. With every print, the output bursts in vibrant colors - it's really suitable for graphic projects. You can buy toner cartridges at affordable prices. Some are offered in sets but you can also purchase a toner individually. Mono prints are also of good quality. Plus, this printer is so portable you can get quality printer materials anywhere you like!
No: Reasons why you "may not" want to by this
- Speed limits. Depending on whether you're used to having ultra-fast printers, you may find the Samsung CLX 3180 Printer a little bit slower. However, if compared to the average types of printers, this model's speed (4 pages/min for colored outputs and 16 pages/min for black and white ones) is within the typical range.
- Photo problems. Although the printing quality of Samsung CLX 3180 is good, there are some unsatisfied consumers who claim that they're experiencing color problems and line irregularities when it comes to printing pictures. Sometimes though, faulty cartridges may have caused this problem; that's why it's really important to get genuine Samsung CLX3180 toner cartridges from official dealers or distributors.
- Printing problems. Some users complain that this model does not print documents even if you've hit the print button. If the cause of this problem is not about the connection between the printer and the computer, then the next thing to check is the toner cartridge. If the toner level is low, the printer may show some warning. That's why; it's really essential to refill your Samsung CLX 3180 Toner cartridge regularly.
Now that you've had a glimpse of what the Samsung CLX 3180 Printer is made off - you can more or less determine whether this model is indeed the right one for you.

Picking a Good Password

Picking a Good Password

Picking something you will remember

When picking a password it is always a good idea to pick something that you will remember. It's best not to use words that are easy to guess in fact sometimes no words are best at all, use lyrics from a song, your favorite heroes catchphrase ect. Once you've gotten that try to alter it in a way that makes it even harder to guess like for instance if your favorite hero is Superman you could take "Up, Up and Away".
Password Security
A secure password is just as important as a password you will remember. From "Up, Up and Away" we can take the first or last four letters for argument sake we're gonna take the first 4 which gives us uuaa (this might seem easy to guess but bear with me also keep in mind uuaa isn't gonna be found in a dictionary and is also unlikely to be guessed at random). From uuaa we can take it a step further and make it UUaA (most of the time passwords are case sensitive thus even if someone could guess it unless they know which letters are upper case and which are lowercase it's even harder to guess the password). I don't know about you, but I'm a computer nerd and there's this thing called 1337 (leet/elite) speak in which you replace common letters with numbers just a tip but the letter a is 4 in 1337 speak so we could take this even further by going UUa4 which makes it even harder to guess at. Even if you're not familiar with 1337 speak try to incorporate numbers somehow it makes it a lot harder to guess, just make sure it's something you will remember.
Hackers and Crackers

There are people out there that would love to steal your passwords, why? Simply put so they can make your life hell they realize that with your passwords to say your email they can get private information such as personal pictures, credit card numbers, social security numbers. Identities are stolen online quite frequently, in many ways, it doesn't help you or anyone but the people stealing to have weak defenseless passwords. There are programs that are used to guess at passwords called "crackers" there are a few types of cracking one the common methods is taking words from a dictionary or just a list of words and inputting it into the computer until it guesses the right password, you can safeguard yourself from this kind of attack by doing passwords as I have described here(which is not making them words at all, but unique codes which you, and only you understand!
Keep yourself safe sincerely, Robert Hendry.
If by some chance you have lost or forgotten the password to windows you can find more information at http://forgotmypassword.org/resetting-your-password-with-password-resetter

The Best Way To Use Geochemical Software

The Best Way To Use Geochemical Software

Geochemical software is very important for any geologist no matter what it is that they are trying to employ. There are several different types of programs that geologists use to create data for their theoretical presentations. It is important if you plan on using this kind of programming that you understand what each program does so that you are sure to select the right one for what you are doing.
The mapping software creates a digital map of the area that the geologist is studying or creating a presentation on. With newer technology, they are able to record and change information about the areas they are studying while out in the field conducting work.
With the use of subsurface mapping, geologists can map their studies of mineral deposits and energy uses. They are able to produce better quality of subsurface analysis. The geologists are able to target and prospect data more efficiently.
ArcGis creates maps that can be viewed by others over the internet. There are numerous extensions available for the ArcGis system. These extensions consist of ArcReader, ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. The extensions are included in a package called ArcGis desktop. They mainly extend the functionality of the ArcGis system.
There are many other extensions available from the ArcGis server. There is a 3D extension available for creating 3D images of their data compilations to make analysis easier for the analyzer. You'll also find the spatial extension of which is used to digitally measure distance of areas recorded in 3D modeling.
Among the other extensions available are the geostatistical, network, image, data interoperability, workflow manager, and the schematics extension. All these tools will help geologists gather their data more efficiently. It is important that before these tools are downloaded that you make sure that you know which version of ArcGis Desktop you are running and download the appropriate extensions for that version.
Geologists need Geophysical Software for their programming equipment needs. Geophysical Software is business that develops application programs for interpretation and field data reduction. They offer the LaserTC, RasterTC, and the InnerTC. All these programs are developed in the aspect of gravity field interpretation and data reduction research.
3D modeling for geologists is usually done using the Environmental Visualization System (EVS) and the Mining Visualization System (MVS). While using these tools, geoscientists can interpret their data into visually striking representations. Such models are used to explain to others their plans and ideas.
Geological Software is yet another company that produces programs for use in data compilation in geology. They give the geology community a program called Fabric 8. Fabric 8 is made up of 30 smaller programs that are the solution to various problems for scientists out in the field.
All in all, these programs are all to be used to make the field work and presentations of geologists easier and more accurate. These programs give anyone the ability to understand the geological world. With today's newer geochemical software, it is possible to get an even better understanding of the earth by picking the layers apart in 3d modelling software.

Computers and Cars

Your car has as many as 100 microprocessors onboard. If someone said that to you would you believe them? Well it's true. Would you believe me if I said your car may contain more lines of software code than a fighter jet? Well it's true. Premium-class automobiles these days have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 million lines of codes, about 95 million lines of software code more than a U.S. military fighter jet.
Lines of software code are necessary to operate 50 to 100 microprocessors known as ECUs (Electronic Control Units) onboard vehicles. Somewhere in the future automobiles are expected to use 200 million to 300 million lines of code to operate ECUs. This enables ECUs to make decisions in 15 to 40 milliseconds. It is estimated that more than 80 percent of car innovations come from computer systems and that software has become the major contributor of value (as well as sticker price) in cars. Over the years the number of microprocessors has increased to meet emissions, fuel economy standards, reduction of wiring, and meet new safety features. In the future there is even a possibility of connecting your car computer system to a network specialist that can download data, analyze data, and upload needed software.
Microcontrollers (MCUs) located in the automobiles engine control system are small computers containing a core processor, RAM (random access memory), and input/output peripherals. These microcontrollers have gone from 12 MHz 8051 CPU's to 32-bit processing power with multiple sets of peripherals. Microcontrollers are used to control the transmission, anti-lock brakes, air bag system, climate controls, and other key components within a car. Multiple microcontrollers work alone and need to send information to other MCUs. As a result, three different network bus systems were developed named CAN, LIN, and MOST.
CAN (Controller Area Networks) is a fast serial bus used in automobile applications. CAN uses twisted pair cable to allow ECU's and other devices to communicate with one another without a host computer (server). Data can be sent up to eight bytes using non-return-to-zero binary pattern bit rates, up to 1 Mbps- the same speed as some satellite downloads.
LIN (Local Interconnect Network) is a low-speed communication bus with one master and up to 16 slave buses. LIN uses sub-networks in order to communicate with CAN up to 20 kbps.
MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) is a high speed multimedia network used to transmit video, audio, and data in automobiles. The network uses a ring topology with synchronous communication. MOST is broken down into three generations. MOST25 was first introduced which only had a bandwidth of 705.6 kbit/s. Second, MOST50 increased bandwidth and was capable of transmitting data up to 1024 kbit/s. MOST150 was released in 2007 and increased data transfer rates up to 3072 kbit/s.
All in all, cars these days are becoming more sophisticated than ever before. Computer technology has taken a major toll on how automobiles are manufactured today. Cars now are not all about the rims, paint job, and sunroofs like they have been in the past. Consumers want GPS, satellite television, heat sensing cameras, and more; so software and hardware equipment has been on the rise by many automobile manufacturers. Who knows where this technology will take us, there may come a day that all we do is press a button to start the car; lean back, and let the car take over duties like accelerate, steer, and stop. Given the amount of code lines projected to be in automobiles in the next few years this day is not far away.
